When Carnavas initially hit stores three years ago, Silversun Pickups hadn't yet gained enough notoriety to set themselves up as headliners. Now with Swoon's official release today SSPU are seen in a different light and have blossomed in the process. We highly recommend picking Swoon up and checking out their first single, "Panic Switch".
Also releasing this week is a band MUF has been following for quite some time - Jeniferever. The subtle melodies of this Swedish group have put them on the map and are set to go with their latest album, Spring Tides. You might also want to know that Death Cab For Cutie's The Open Door EP is out today in physical form as well as Dntel's Early Works For Me If It Works For You.

Death Cab for Cutie along with Cold War Kids and Ra Ra Riot packed the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA on Tuesday night. As both opening acts draw a substantial amount of fans on their own, not surprisingly so, most of the seats were already filled when Death Cab's set arrived.
Cold War Kids
The organized chaos of Cold War Kids rang through the hall of the two-tiered venue about half an hour after Ra Ra Riot's set concluded. Combining a mix of their two albums, Robbers and Cowards (2006) and Loyalty to Loyalty (2008), the group smoothly transitioned between these albums during their hour set.
As their current album cover hung in the backdrop, the band combined the distinct sound of front-man Nathan Willet's voice with their erratic musical score, which when combined asynchronously with their equally erratic dancing meld together for a rather entertaining show.
The soulful lyrics and quirky arrangement of The Cold War Kids is a pleasant change from bands who rely on catchy hooks and pop-undertones to captivate their audience. With their ability to draw in new fans wherever they go, songwriting could be the make or break factor for the Cold War Kids, although for a live show they prove instantly likeable.
The Fullerton, CA quartet is currently opening for Death Cab on their new tour. Tour dates for the group can be found here.
Death Cab For Cutie
For Death Cab, the live shows help fans embrace new material in the best possible way. Last June when we covered their show at the Mann Center, the lyrics from Narrow Stairs were yelled back to the four guys on stage as each song had already become familiar territory for the masses.
On Tuesday night, the group introduced their most recent effort, The Open Door EP, which although strewn with memorable phrases, hadn't yet reached the point where droves of fans sang along. In fact, the crowd was much less active due to a lack of move-around room and a set list that fed upon all of DCFC's works, and not just one album.
Besides the new material being added to the show, the Tower Theater also proved quite a different setting to hear the Seattle crew. Unlike an outdoor venue strewn with subwoofers that shake cars driving on the nearby highway, this show didn't feature drowning bass lines.
Highlighting the show as expected were "Cath..." and "Soul Meets Body", but the encore presentation of "A Diamond and a Tether" from the new EP could be the next anticipated song at shows. "Grapevine Fires", which is a pretty somber-toned track, caught the emotion of the somewhat still crowd as Ben Gibbard's vocals carefully rose and faded while the stage glowed red and blue.

This week the in-store version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' It's Blitz is finally out while Death Cab For Cutie's Open Door EP is being released digitally. Both should provide quite a spark for any fan of their previous works.
Peter, Bjorn & John also hit shelves today as Living Thing marks another chapter in the Swedes' collection of new wave pop recordings. We previously jammed to Writers Block from the trio.
Although not anticipating warm weather since they reign from L.A., The Faraway Places have released a groovy psychedelic album (Out of the Rain, the Thunder & the Lightning) worthy of sunny days and multiple listens.

With their latest EP releasing next week and tour dates already sold out, we thought we would keep the buzz going for one of our favorite groups - Death Cab For Cutie.
The Open Door EP, which is scheduled to hit online stores next Tuesday, marks Death Cab's first release since Narrow Stairs from last May. Stereogum has been streaming new tracks from this EP every day this week, so if you want to get a feel for the tracks, listen to the clips below and then head for the full versions on their site.
This new EP seems to continue with the group's style of meandering lyrics keyed with anything from stringy acoutic guitar sets to drum-heavy tempo-driving beats. We will be attending the show on April 7th, so stay tuned for pics and a show review.

Death Cab For Cutie's latest video for one of their most beloved tranquil tracks "Grapevine Fires" has made yet another one of our favorite videos thus far this year.
What captured our attention is the lost art of using 2-D used by director Walter Robot (also directed Gnarls Barkley). With game systems of the past long gone and 3-D technology in movie theatres on the rise, the use of 2-D is scarcely used anymore, but brilliant when combined with the hand-drawn words and characters shown here.
The storyline itself tells of burning pastures, which are undoubtedly referring to the ones in the Western US in the summertime. With the ranch-style houses (pictured in the video) and warm climates that make these brushfires so easy to spark up, their song hits an important issue that many have struggled with; particularly those who have suffered from the fires in Australia.

20. Low Vs Diamond - Actions Are Actions (buy)
Why: From the harmonizing in the opening all the way down the the refrain and verses, this not only an excellent job of songwriting, but an exhillarating effort by one onf our favorite new finds this year. It really doesn't get much better than the breakdown 1:47 into the song.
19. American Princes - Auditorium (buy)
Why: The first 5 seconds sounds like something The Eagles may have put together years ago, but the song takes an upbeat turn with the drums, which is one of many factors that pulled this song together to make it work so well at the quick pace that it pulls. Fantastic job by American Princes for sneaking into our top 20.
18. Earlimart - Face Down In The Right Town (buy)
Why: Each time this song is played, its hard to get the 'Da do-do, Da do-do' out of your head. Earlimart's sublties are what makes them so great. Additional background vocals and piano add-ons make this a fantastic song. Personally, I would love to hear an acoustic version of this song done in all piano. This is our favorite Earlimart song to date.
17. Daniel Martin Moore - That'll Be The Plan (buy)
Why: As one of our readers put so well, it feels as though Moore is channelling Nick Drake. The songs are written so well, and the guitar-work is the driving factor in most of his album, but this song's happy nature and pleasant tattered rhythms made this our personal favorite that cannot be missed!
16. Dr. Dog - The Breeze (buy)
Why: As far as quick-hitters go, songs you immediately are drawn to, Philadelphia's own Dr. Dog stunned us with "The Breeze". The sullen vocals of Scott McMicken created a retro sound and blissful experience every time we listened to this song. Truly, this song will live on for years due to the songs tactful nature and composition of classic sounds we've all known to love.
15. Your Vegas - Troubled Times (buy)
Why: One of our favorite electro-rockers Your Vegas came out with a stunning, polished self-titled album this year and premiered this song off of their A Town and Two Cities EP. It remains our favorite song from the group.
14. Tokyo Police Club - Tessellate (buy)
Why: Months ago, I recall trying to figure out which song I really liked best off of this album, and with all of the peppy songs to pick from, 'Tessellate' was our hands-down, favorite pick. Maybe its the piano breakdowns, or maybe its the clapping/drumming combination, but whatever the case, we have added tessellate into our favorite songs of the year as well as our ever-expanding vocabulary.
13. Cut Copy - Lights and Music (buy)
Why: Its amazing that iTunes offered this song as a free download the week this came out, and we've been enjoying it ever since. Cut Copy's album was hard not to be recognized this year and the dance scene benefitted from this techno driven song, laced with some guitars -something these guys have blended so well.
12. Elbow - Mirrorball (buy)
Why: Another beautiful song from an extremely talented band. We can't stress enough how great it was to have Elbow return with another gem this year. If you don't know much about these guys and have quite the eclectic rock tastes, you might want to go back and listen to the rest of their catalogue.
11. The Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight (buy)
Why: This song has found its way into everyone's music libraries in 2008 and this song alone has made a name for the band. We felt it was such an anomaly, we had to include it in our top 20. The guitar pedals and singing are right up our alley.
10. Delta Spirit - Trashcan (buy)
Why: DS was pieced together of mainly percussionists and this song is already a classic, as far as we're concerned. The piano is refreshing as well as the soulful singing by Matt Vasquez. A perfect fit for our top 10.
9. MGMT - Time To Pretend (buy)
Why: You may have played it out by now, but MGMT's song "Time To Pretend" was all over the place this year in commercials, movie previews and everyone's iPods. We particularly can get enough of the synth melodie during the refrain. Match the song up with this year's most ridiculous video and you've got yourself our #9.
8. Coldplay Lovers In Japan / Reign Of Love (buy)
Why: Everything great about Coldplay is included in this song including some new touches added by Brian Eno. The pickup around 1:11 into the song makes this one of our favorites and an easy song to continuously return to.
7. French Kicks - Said So What (buy)
Why: Everything about this song is perfect, from the pool ball-breaking rhythm to the vocal chemistry. If there is one band to go see that we haven't, French Kicks are at the top of the list. Everything these guys create seems to melt in our ears.
6. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Modern Mystery (buy)
Why: One of our most returned songs of 08' is "Modern Mystery" due to its soft-rock appeal and some clever lyrics - "You can really put me in my place, on a map in outer space." Not enough has been said of this talented group in 2008!
5. Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal (buy)
Why: The harmony and picture just listening to this song with your eyes closed is enough to make us drop this one right into our #4 spot. Fleet Foxes stunned us this past year and will undoubtedly continue to do so, given our soft-spot for folksy bands.
4. Ra Ra Riot - Can You Tell (buy)
Why: A sucker for violins and some great heartfelt lyrics made Ra Ra Riot's "Can You Tell" a shoo-in for one of our favorite songs. Its really hard to ignore Ra Ra Riot, especially with a song like this.
3. Death Cab For Cutie - Cath... (buy)
Why: The one redeeming moment for DCFC was their best song from the album, "Cath...". The redeeming factor for this album was the lyrics pieced into every song by Gibbard, and although "Cath.." may be a bit depressing, its done perfectly so in a classic Death Cab style.
2. The Helio Sequence - Keep Your Eyes Ahead (buy)
Why: Our music libraries would fall completely apart in 2008 had it not been for The Helio Sequence's stunning album and title-track that we listed here. What more could you possibly want from a band? We had trouble choosing our favorite song from this album, but looking back at their show in May of this past year, this really was their best song performed live and comes across so well on the album as well.
1. Blitzen Trapper - God & Suicide (buy)
Why: The notion behind our #1 track is nothing pleasant to really put too much time into thinking about, but everything comes together in this song. Every time this track is played, CCR comes to mind, along with every other classic rock song that managed to stick around for decades. The same will happen to this song and Blitzen Trapper will continue to live on long after they band is finished playing. Excellent song by all accounts. Our only gripe may be that its only two minues long!
Death Cab For Cutie's "Cath..." video is now out.
One of the marquee songs off of their Narrow Stairs album, to me "Cath..." personally works well without any video. Unlike many videos out there DCFC match the lyrics of the song with what was in the video.
I can't say enough how much this group amazes me at their every turn. Enjoy, and if you haven't picked up the album, jump on it.

Several days since their incredible show at the Mann Center in Philadelphia, we are happy to give a few words about Death Cab for Cutie's performance. We wish we took better pictures but we won't dwell on that. If you really want pictures, check out Pitchfork's take on the show.
Amid a crowd still marching to the hum of Rogue Wave, Ben Gibbard, Nick Harmer, Jason McGerr and Chris Walla strolled across the large stage to take their place. Opening with "Bixby Canyon Bridge" as the cover to their Narrow Stairs album hung behind them the thousands in attendance constantly sang along.
Although their new album boast a bunch of great songs, DCFC stuck with what the fans wanted: tons of Plans, Transatlanticism and the favorites from The Photo Album and We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes. It turned out to be phenomenal.
While Gibbard hung out and went crazy playing his guitar while serenading the audience, Walla moved between the guitar and the piano as well as providing backup vocals. As one of the people I talked to at the show said, "Is this the CD or the live show? Can't tell."
Truly a must-see group for hardcore DCFC fans or just a casual fan of a few of their songs.

You guessed it, Narrow Stairs is out today! Death Cab For Cutie's long-awaited umpteenth album boasts to be nothing like they've done before. Judging by a few listens today, it certainly resounds of the Death Cab we all know and love, but with a much different approach to every song. Our favorite right now is "Cath...", which we were able to get a sneak peek at via Radio 1 who featured Ben Gibbard playing acoustic as well as The Daytrotter Sessions released two weeks ago.
More out this week is from Pomegranates, who's indie rock style is like none other. Go back and check out "Nursery Magic" from their Two Eyes EP, our favorite of theirs to date. Also be sure to see what We Are Scientists have to offer with Brain Trust Mystery.
On the electronica side of things The Presets are back again with their fifth album, Apacolypso. We'll also award best album name to Dan Friel's Ghost Town, since anything involving the word "Ghost" has to be pretty darn far from pop. I guess you could say so for Black Angels' Directions To See A Ghost too.

For all of those like us, the release of Death Cab For Cutie's video for "I Will Possess Your Heart" off of the Narrow Stairs album, which is set to release next month, only did so much in answering questions about where the group is heading. MUF did a quick review of their single last month- check it out here.
This 8:30 video didn't strike me as anything beyond what DCFC put forth in their previous works. In this video we see a girl traveling the whole world- sound familiar? If not then perhaps you need a refresher of the music notes traveling the globe from "Soul Meets Body." As any DCFC fan knows, the EPs, singles and the albums can come across as quite different from each other, so why should this song reflect the whole album.
If you haven't done so yet, go out and pick up their Directions DVD, which featured their Plans album but with outside professionals doing the videos. Perhaps what DCFC has in store again with Narrow Stairs. Without any delay, here is the video ...

Come Saturday, I feel almost exhausted with the amount of entertainment around me, but alas, a drive in the car can fix that in a heartbeat. Review: Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart

First off, let me say that I was not expecting something 8:36 long and this is something most bands do not do since they want to get their point across for what the rest of the album sounds like. If I were to take anything from this song and make an album based on just this one song, I would stand by the fact that this album is not upbeat, nor is it going to be over the edge with poppiness or catchy hooks, like many bands do to throttle their stardom. Death Cab, having more than a following may just further showcase each instrument, which is something that has been overlooked on the course of their past two albums.
"I Will Possess Your Heart" would make me look so right if this were the case for Narrow Stairs. The song is really just your classic DCFC intrumental, like that in "Stability" from the Stability EP (which is their longest song - 12:22 to be exact). It only takes a mere four minutes and thirty-six seconds until we hear Gibbard chime in, yet the song still does not pick up.
I'll get straight to the point - you'll love this if you're a DCFC fan, but it is by no means better than FIVE of the songs on Plans. I'll even name them: "Soul Meets Body", "Your Heart Is An Empty Room", "Brothers On A Hotel Bed", "Summer Skin", and "I Will Follow You Into The Dark". For me, Death Cab's best songs have generally been around three and a half minutes.
I'm not quite sure the purpose of making this song their single, since it ranks up there with other songs I would put at the end of an album (this song falls second in their track listing), but I can appreciate the slowed down instrumentation they used, although it wouldn't surpass one of my favorites "Transatlanticism".
The song eventually picks up at 6:46, but alas, it is too long for me. Perhaps their plan is to throw everyone off with this song and leave the true gems on the album to be heard later, afterall, it IS the singles that are killing the artists, isn't it? Cough, Cough!

Video: Death Cab For Cutie - Soul Meets Body
Chris Walla, the guitarist and producer for Death Cab for Cutie, will release his solo project, Field Manual, on Tuesday Jan. 29.
Walla played all of the instruments on the album except the drums, which were added thanks to Jason McGerr (DCFC) and Kurt Dahle (New Pornographers)
According to DCFC news, if you buy the album before Feb. 4 from barsuk.com, you will also get three MP3 non-album bonus tracks.
